RESUMEN

Due to the obvious numerous economic and technical consequences of the corrosion process, its inhibition is one of the most critical aspects of current research. A corrosion inhibitor for the bis-thiophene Schiff base copper-metal complex Cu(II)@Thy-2 was investigated here, which was synthesized via a coordination reaction with a bis-thiophene Schiff base (Thy-2) as a ligand and copper chloride (CuCl2-2H2O) as a ligand metal salt. When the corrosion inhibitor concentration was increased to 100 ppm, the self-corrosion current density Icoor reached a minimum of 2.207 × 10-5 A/cm2, the charge transfer resistance reached a maximum of 932.5 Ω·cm2, and the corrosion inhibition efficiency reached a maximum of 95.2%, with the corrosion inhibition efficiency showing a trend of increasing first and then decreasing with concentration increase. After adding Cu(II)@Thy-2 corrosion inhibitor, a uniformly distributed dense corrosion inhibitor adsorption film formed on the surface of the Q235 metal substrate, significantly improving the corrosion profile compared to both before and after the addition of the corrosion inhibitor. Before and after the addition of corrosion inhibitor, the metal surface's contact angle CA increased from 54.54° to 68.37°, showing that the adsorbed corrosion inhibitor film decreased the metal surface's hydrophilicity and increased its hydrophobicity.

Here, we present a high-quality chromosome-scale genome assembly (2.19 Gb) and annotation of Tetrastigma hemsleyanum, a perennial herbaceous liana native to subtropical China with diverse medicinal applications. Approximately 73% of the genome was comprised of transposable elements (TEs), of which long terminal repeat retrotransposons (LTR-RTs) were a predominant group (69% of the genome). The genome size increase of T. hemsleyanum (relative to Vitis species) was mostly due to the proliferation of LTR-RTs. Of the different modes of gene duplication identified, transposed duplication (TRD) and dispersed duplication (DSD) were the predominant ones. Genes, particularly those involved in the phenylpropanoid-flavonoid (PF) pathway and those associated with therapeutic properties and environmental stress resistance, were significantly amplified through recent tandem duplications. We dated the divergence of two intraspecific lineages in Southwest (SW) versus Central-South-East (CSE) China to the late Miocene (approximately 5.2 million years ago). Of those, the former showed more upregulated genes and metabolites. Based on resequencing data of 38 individuals representing both lineages, we identified various candidate genes related to 'response to stimulus' and 'biosynthetic process', including ThFLS11, which is putatively involved in flavonoid accumulation. Overall, this study provides abundant genomic resources for future evolutionary, ecological, and functional genomics studies in T. hemsleyanum and related species.

Conductive hydrogels with high electrical conductivity, ductility, and anti-dryness have promising applications in flexible wearable electronics. However, its potential applications in such a developing field are severely hampered by its extremely poor adaptability to cold or hot environmental conditions. In this research, an "organic solvent/water" composite conductive hydrogel is developed by introducing a binary organic solvent of EG/H2O into the system using a simple one-pot free radical polymerization method to create Ti3C2TX MXene nanosheet-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylamide covalently networked nanocomposite hydrogels (PAEM) with excellent flexibility and mechanical properties. The optimized PAEM contains 0.3 wt% MXene has excellent mechanical performance (tensile elongation of ~1033%) and an improved modulus of elasticity (0.14 MPa), a stable temperature tolerance from -50 to 40 °C, and a high gauge factor of 10.95 with a long storage period and response time of 110 ms. Additionally, it is worth noting that the elongation at break at -40 °C was maintained at around 50% of room temperature. This research will contribute to the development of flexible sensors for human-computer interaction, electronic skin, and human health monitoring.

Andrographis paniculata (Burm. F.) Nees (AP) was a typical plant resource that has the concomitant function of both foodstuff and medicine, while the action mechanisms of its immune regulation, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral effects and the specific components remain unclear. In this work, a screening approach combining bio-affinity ultrafiltration with liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (UF-LC/MS) was hired to screen potential bioactive compounds from AP. The crude extract of AP exerted COX-2 and ACE2 inhibitory effects by other bioassays. Meanwhile, a total of eleven ligands targeting COX-2, IL-6 and ACE2 were screened out. Thereinto, two compounds including andrographolide and 14-deoxy-11,12-didehydroandrographolide exhibited strong binding affinities to COX-2, IL-6 and ACE2 by UF-LC/MS and molecular docking analysis. This is the first report to apply UF-LC/MS approach to rapidly screen out multi-target ligands from AP, and further decipher corresponding mechanisms, which could be beneficial to expedite the search for new multi-target bioactive compounds in other natural products or foods.

Phenol formaldehyde resins (PFRs) as a colloidal oil displacement agent were commonly used to plug pores in crude oil reservoirs for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The aggregation-dispersion and charging behavior of PFR may affect the rheology and plugging performance of the suspension. To understand the aggregation-dispersion and charge of PFR, turbidity, dynamic light scattering, and electrophoretic light scattering experiments were carried out at pH = 10 with different concentrations of salt solutions (NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2, NaCl/MgCl2, and NaCl/CaCl2). The aggregation rate and ζ-potential were measured, and the critical coagulation concentration (CCC) and critical coagulation ionic strength (CCIS) were further obtained. Based on the triple-layer surface complexation (TL) model, the adsorption ability of cations and the surface characteristics of the PFR particles were studied, and these differences were explained by interface energy. Thus, Derjaguin-Landau and Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory modified by interface energy was applied to explain the aggregation behavior of PFR particles in different types of ion systems. We concluded that, in the presence of multiple ions, DLVO theory modified by interface energy has good applicability to the aggregation-dispersion of PFR particles.

RESUMEN

This paper presents an improved method for selecting a specific location in the development of convenience stores in municipal areas. This method solves the problem of self-service store location from the perspective of sustainability and uncertainty and adequately considers the characteristics of individual locations with the proposition of an improved grey wolf optimization algorithm. The example presented shows that the improved algorithm has obvious advantages in facilitating the selection of convenience stores with respect to the search precision, stability, and convergence. Based on the macroenvironment, income, and cost, this work establishes a relatively complex, complete, and targeted mathematical model. Finally, taking the Xiaonanzhuang area of Suzhou Street in Beijing as an example, the scientificity, feasibility, and sustainability of the location model are verified.

Background: Dysosma versipellis (D. versipellis) has been traditionally used as a folk medicine for ages. However, the specific phytochemicals responsible for their correlated anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative and antiviral activities remain unknown. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the specific active components in D. versipellis responsible for its potential anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and antiviral effects, and further elucidate the corresponding mechanisms of action. Methods: Bioaffinity ultrafiltration coupled to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UF-LC/MS) was firstly hired to fast screen for the anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative and antiviral compounds from rhizomes of D. versipellis, and then further validation was conducted using in vitro inhibition assays and molecular docking. Results: A total of 12, 12, 9 and 12 phytochemicals with considerable affinities to Topo I, Topo II, COX-2 and ACE2 were fished out, respectively. The anti-proliferative assay in vitro indicated that podophyllotoxin and quercetin exhibited comparably strong inhibitory rates on A549 and HT-29 cells compared with 5-FU and etoposide. Meanwhile, kaempferol displayed prominent dose-dependent inhibition against COX-2 with IC50 value at 0.36 ± 0.02 µM lower than indomethacin at 0.73 ± 0.07 µM. Furthermore, quercetin exerted stronger inhibitory effect against ACE2 with IC50 value at 104.79 ± 8.26 µM comparable to quercetin 3-O-glucoside at 135.25 ± 6.54 µM. Conclusion: We firstly showcased an experimental investigation on the correlations between bioactive phytochemicals of D. versipellis and their multiple drug targets reflecting its potential pharmacological activities, and further constructed a multi-target and multi-component network to decipher its empirical traditional applications. It could not only offer a reliable and valuable experimental basis to better comprehend the curative effects of D. versipellis but also provide more new insights and strategies for other traditional medicinal plants.

BACKGROUND: To explore the efficacy and toxicity of simultaneous modulated accelerated radiotherapy (SMART) concurrently with cisplatin (CDDP) and S1 (tegafur/gimeracil/oteracil) in elderly patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS: This single-arm, phase II study enrolled pathologically confirmed, stage II-IVa ESCC of 70-80 years old and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) 0-2. Patients received SMART (64 Gy to gross tumor volume and 48 Gy to clinical target volume in 30 fractions) with concurrent CDDP (day 1 of each week) and S1 (days 1-14, 22-35). The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR). The secondary endpoints included progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and toxicities. RESULTS: Thirty-seven eligible patients were analyzed with median follow-up of 25.7 months for all and 46.1 months for survivors. The ORR was 88.9%. Patients with baseline weight loss <5% (p=0.050) and nutritional risk index (NRI) ≥105.2 (p=0.023) had better tumor response. Median PFS was 13.8 months with 2-year PFS of 37.5%. Median OS was 27.7 months with 2-year OS of 57.5%. OS was significantly associated with ECOG PS (p=0.005), stage (p=0.014), gross tumor volume (p=0.004), baseline NRI (p=0.036), baseline C-reactive protein (CRP) level (p=0.003) and tumor response (p=0.000). CRP level (p=0.016) and tumor response (p=0.021) were independently prognostic of OS. ≥grade 3 anemia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia occurred in 2.7%, 10.8% and 13.5% of patients; ≥grade 3 esophagitis and pneumonitis occurred in 18.9% and 2.7% of patient, respectively. CONCLUSION: SMART concurrently with CDDP/S1 yielded satisfactory response rate, survival outcome and tolerable treatment-related toxicities in elderly patients with ESCC. Further studies are warranted to validate the results.

Podophyllum sinense (P. sinense) has been used as a traditional herbal medicine for ages due to its extensive pharmaceutical activities, including antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, insecticidal effects, etc. Nevertheless, the specific bioactive constituents responsible for its antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral activities remain elusive, owing to its complicated and diversified chemical components. In order to explore these specific bioactive components and their potential interaction targets, affinity ultrafiltration with multiple drug targets coupled with high performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (UF-HPLC/MS) strategy was developed to rapidly screen out and identify bioactive compounds against four well-known drug targets that are correlated to the application of P. sinense as a traditional medicine, namely, Topo I, Topo II, COX-2, and ACE2. As a result, 7, 10, 6, and 7 phytochemicals were screened out as the potential Topo I, Topo II, COX-2, and ACE2 ligands, respectively. Further confirmation of these potential bioactive components with antiproliferative and COX-2 inhibitory assays in vitro was also implemented. Herein, diphyllin and podophyllotoxin with higher EF values demonstrated higher inhibitory rates against A549 and HT-29 cells as compared with those of 5-FU and etoposide. The IC50 values of diphyllin were calculated at 6.46 ± 1.79 and 30.73 ± 0.56 µM on A549 and HT-29 cells, respectively. Moreover, diphyllin exhibited good COX-2 inhibitory activity with the IC50 value at 1.29 ± 0.14 µM, whereas indomethacin was 1.22 ± 0.08 µM. In addition, those representative constituents with good affinity on Topo I, Topo II, COX-2, or ACE2, such as diphyllin, podophyllotoxin, and diphyllin O-glucoside, were further validated with molecular docking analysis. Above all, the integrated method of UF-HPLC/MS with multiple drug targets rapidly singled out multi-target bioactive components and partly elucidated their action mechanisms regarding its multiple pharmacological effects from P. sinense, which could provide valuable information about its further development for the new multi-target drug discovery from natural medicines.

BACKGROUND: Patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma have a high risk of disease relapse, despite a high proportion of patients attaining complete clinical remission after receiving standard-of-care treatment (ie, definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy with or without induction chemotherapy). Additional adjuvant therapies are needed to further reduce the risk of recurrence and death. However, the benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma remains controversial, highlighting the need for more effective adjuvant treatment options. METHODS: This multicentre, open-label, parallel-group, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial was done at 14 hospitals in China. Patients (aged 18-65 years) with histologically confirmed, high-risk locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (stage III-IVA, excluding T3-4N0 and T3N1 disease), no locoregional disease or distant metastasis after definitive chemoradiotherapy, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 or 1, sufficient haematological, renal, and hepatic function, and who had received their final radiotherapy dose 12-16 weeks before randomisation, were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either oral metronomic capecitabine (650 mg/m2 body surface area twice daily for 1 year; metronomic capecitabine group) or observation (standard therapy group). Randomisation was done with a computer-generated sequence (block size of four), stratified by trial centre and receipt of induction chemotherapy (yes or no). The primary endpoint was failure-free survival, defined as the time from randomisation to disease recurrence (distant metastasis or locoregional recurrence) or death due to any cause, in the intention-to-treat population. Safety was assessed in all patients who received at least one dose of capecitabine or who had commenced observation. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02958111. FINDINGS: Between Jan 25, 2017, and Oct 25, 2018, 675 patients were screened, of whom 406 were enrolled and randomly assigned to the metronomic capecitabine group (n=204) or to the standard therapy group (n=202). After a median follow-up of 38 months (IQR 33-42), there were 29 (14%) events of recurrence or death in the metronomic capecitabine group and 53 (26%) events of recurrence or death in the standard therapy group. Failure-free survival at 3 years was significantly higher in the metronomic capecitabine group (85·3% [95% CI 80·4-90·6]) than in the standard therapy group (75·7% [69·9-81·9]), with a stratified hazard ratio of 0·50 (95% CI 0·32-0·79; p=0·0023). Grade 3 adverse events were reported in 35 (17%) of 201 patients in the metronomic capecitabine group and in 11 (6%) of 200 patients in the standard therapy group; hand-foot syndrome was the most common adverse event related to capecitabine (18 [9%] patients had grade 3 hand-foot syndrome). One (<1%) patient in the metronomic capecitabine group had grade 4 neutropenia. No treatment-related deaths were reported in either group. INTERPRETATION: The addition of metronomic adjuvant capecitabine to chemoradiotherapy significantly improved failure-free survival in patients with high-risk locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, with a manageable safety profile. These results support a potential role for metronomic chemotherapy as an adjuvant therapy in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In this study, a series of hollow ZnxFe3-xO4@polyaniline composites (ZFO@PANI) were synthesized by a facile solvothermal process and followed by in-situ chemical oxidation polymerization method, and then evaluated as microwave absorption (MA) absorbers. The effect of ZFO content on the electrical conductivity, electromagnetic parameters and MA performance of the ZFO@PANI composites was also elaborately investigated. As anticipated, the optimized composites of S2 exhibits the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of -59.44 dB at 11.04 GHz with a matching thickness of 2.31 mm, and the broadest effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL < -10 dB, >90% absorption) of up to 4.65 GHz (13.35-18.0 GHz) at 1.72 mm. Noticeably, by adjusting the thickness from 1.5 to 5.0 mm, it can be observed that its RLmin values are all much lower than -10 dB and the qualified EAB can cover the entire C, X and Ku bands. The enhanced MA performance of S2 is mainly due to the efficient synergistic effect between dielectric loss (PANI) and magnetic loss (ZFO nanosphere), and thus achieving the relative balance of impedance matching (appropriate ZFO content) and attenuation capability. Therefore, it has great prospect to be explored as attractive candidate in practical application.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging class of porous materials that attracted tremendous attention as eco-friendly photocatalysts. However, poor charge separation in most MOFs largely thwarts their photocatalytic performance. In this work, Materials of Institut Lavoisier-100(Fe) (MIL-100 (Fe)) based on iron mesh was successfully fabricated by in situ growth. MIL-100(Fe) doped with polyaniline, namely MIL-100(Fe)/PANI, were then fabricated by galvanostatic deposition followed by annealing. Compared to pure MIL-100(Fe), MIL-100(Fe)/PANI composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic performances towards Thiamphenicol (TAP) degradation and Escherichia coli (E. Coli.) inactivation. The apparent rate constant, k, for TAP elimination of the MIL-100(Fe)/PANI composites with H2O2 is approximately 3 times as high as that of pure MIL-100(Fe). The electrochemical studies showed enhanced photocatalytic performances, which can be attributed to the electronic conductivity of PANI polymers. Quenching experiments, fluorescent tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) all suggested ⋅O2-, e-, ⋅OH and h+ as reactive oxidizing species (ROSs) involved in the photocatalytic process, where ⋅OH played the predominant ROSs. The transformation products of TAP were also isolated and characterized by high-resolution mass spectrometry, and transformation pathways of TAP under Vis/MIL-100(Fe)/PANI/H2O2 were tentatively clarified based on involved intermediates. Herein, MOFs conjugated conductive polymers nanocomposites look promising as efficient photocatalysts for organic pollutants degradation and bacteria inactivation. This work could offer novel strategies for the development of heterojunction composites with enhanced photocatalytic performances for better environmental remediation.

Although various materials have been studied for the purpose of microwave absorption (MA), natural sepiolite (SEP) has never been reported as MA absorber. Herein, the series of sepiolite@polyaniline composites (SEP@PANI-x) with "skeleton/skin" structure were fabricated through a facile in-situ polymerization technique and firstly developed as MA materials. The electrical conductivity and dielectric properties can be well controlled via modulating the PANI content in the composites. With a lower mass ratio of 30 wt%, it is worth noting that the optimized SEP@PANI-50 could simultaneously display the optimal minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of -50.23 dB and effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL < -10 dB) of 5.01 GHz with thicknesses of 2.5 and 1.8 mm, respectively. Moreover, when changing absorber thickness (1.5-5.0 mm), the RLmin values lower than -20 dB (99% absorption) are all achieved and the EAB ranges the entire Ku, X, and C bands. Such excellent MA performance comes from rich conductive network and polarization relaxation, which ultimately balance the impedance matching and attenuation ability. In view of its facile synthesis route, low-cost, lightweight and excellent MA performance, SEP@PANI-50 would be a very promising MA candidate in many practical applications. More importantly, we also think that our findings will expand the application of SEP-based composites in the electromagnetic field.

The inhibition performance of polyaniline (PANI)/chitosan (CTS) on metal corrosion in 0.5 M HCl was studied using electrochemical measurements, quantum chemical calculations and morphological observations. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements show that PANI/CTS acts essentially as a mixed-type inhibitor. The inhibition efficiency increases and corrosion rates decrease with increasing concentrations of PANI/CTS. The relationship between experimental inhibition efficiency and quantum chemical calculations that were developed to describe the corrosion inhibition process are discussed.

Propyl paraben (propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, PPB), one of the typically used paraben species in various pharmaceutical and personal care products, has been found in different aquatic environment, which could affect the water quality and human health. In this paper, the degradation of PPB by aqueous ferrate (Fe(VI)) was investigated in different water matrix and reaction kinetics as a function of pH was determined. Intermediate products of the degradation process were isolated and characterized by the high performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry techniques. Acute and chronic toxicities during water treatment of PPB using Fe(VI) were calculated using the ECOSAR program at three trophic levels. The obtained apparent second-order rate constant (kapp) for PPB reaction with Fe(VI) ranged from 99.6 ± 0.4 M-1 s-1 to 15.0 ± 0.1 M-1 s-1 with the half-life (t1/2) ranging from 154 s to 1026 s at pH 6.5-10.0 for an Fe(VI) concentration of 600 µM. The proposed pathway for the oxidation of PPB by Fe(VI) involves one electron transfer of phenoxyl radical and breaking of the ether bond. In general, the oxidation of PPB by ferrate resulted in a significant decrease in toxicity at three trophic levels.

OBJECTIVE: Stage N2-3 nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) shows a high risk of distant metastasis, which will finally cause death. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) of various cycles before radical radiotherapy on distant metastasis and survival of patients with stage N2-3 diseases. METHODS: In this study, a total of 1,164 consecutive patients with non-metastatic N2-3 NPC were recruited and prospectively observed. Then 231 patients who received NACT of 4 cycles (NACT=4 group) were matched 1:2:1 to 462 patients treated with NACT of 2 cycles (NACT=2 group) and 231 patients treated without NACT (NACT=0 group), according to age, histological subtype, N stage and NACT regimen. Five candidate variables (sex, T stage, concurrent chemotherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy and cycle number of NACT) were analyzed for their association with patients' survival. RESULTS: After matching, the overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), local-recurrence-free survival (RFS) and distant-metastasis-free survival (MFS) of the NACT=4 group (89.2%, 81.0%, 83.3% and 84.8%, respectively) were better than those of the NACT=2 group (83.3%, 72.5%, 81.2% and 77.9%, respectively) and the NACT=0 group (74.0%, 63.2%, 74.0% and 68.8%, respectively). In multivariate analysis, the cycle number of NACT maintained statistical significance on the OS, DFS, RFS and MFS (all P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: For N2-3 NPC, cycle number of NACT appeared to be an independent factor associated with an improvement of survival.

In this work, hollow multiple-Ag-nanoclustes- C-shell nanocomposites (Ag@C) were synthesized by using silane coupling agent to graft carbon dots (CDs) with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). CDs act as coating and stabilizing agent, protecting AgNPs from aggregation and oxidation. The resulting Ag@C nanocomposites demonstrate strong bactericidal effect against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria in the disk diffusion test. Cellular toxicity evaluation was performed using MTT assay. Meanwhile, the as-prepared Ag@C nanocomposites show a good biocompatibility.

We investigated the distribution of residual cancer cells (RCCs) within different layers of the bowel wall in surgical specimens and the value of biopsies of primary rectal lesion after preoperative volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) with concurrent chemotherapy in patients with rectal cancer. Between April 2011 and April 2013, 178 patients with rectal cancer who received preoperative VMAT, concurrent chemotherapy, and surgery were evaluated; 79 of the patients received a biopsy of the primary lesion after chemoradiotherapy and prior to surgery. The distribution of RCCs in the surgical specimens and the sensitivity and specificity of the biopsy of primary rectal lesions for pathological response were evaluated. Fifty-two patients had a complete pathological response in the bowel wall. Of the 120 patients with ypT2-4, the rate of detection of RCCs in the mucosa, submucosa, and muscularis propria was 20%, 36.7%, 69.2%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of biopsies of primary rectal lesions was 12.9% and 94.1%, respectively. After chemoradiotherapy, the RCCs were primarily located in the deeper layers of the bowel wall, and the biopsy results for primary rectal lesions were unreliable due to poor sensitivity.

Conventional superhydrophobic surfaces have always depended on expensive, sophisticated, and fragile roughness structures. Therefore, poor robustness has turned into the bottleneck for large-scale industrial applications of the superhydrophobic surfaces. To handle this problem, a superhydrophobic surface with firm robustness urgently needs to be developed. In this work, we created a versatile strategy to fabricate robust, self-cleaning, and superhydrophobic surfaces for both soft and hard substrates. We created an ethanol based suspension of perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane-mdodified calcium carbonate nanoparticles which can be sprayed onto both hard and soft substrates to form superhydrophobic surfaces. For all kinds of substrates, spray adhesive was directly coated onto abluent substrate surfaces to promote the robustness. These superhydrophobic surfaces showed remarkable robustness against knife scratch and sandpaper abrasion, while retaining its superhydrophobicity even after 30 abrasion cycles with sandpaper. What is more, the superhydrophobic surfaces have shown promising potential applications in self-cleaning and oil-water separation. The surfaces retained their self-cleaning property even immersed in oil. In addition to oil-water separation, the water contents in oil after separation of various mixtures were all below 150 ppm, and for toluene even as low as 55 ppm. Furthermore, the as-prepared device for oil-water separation could be cycled 6 times and still retained excellent oil-water separation efficiency.

Overexpression of the epidermal growth factor receptor can be found in 80 % of patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and is associated with shorter survival. In this work, we evaluated the feasibility of adding cetuximab to concurrent cisplatin and radiotherapy (RT) in locoregionally advanced NPC. Twenty-eight patients with locoregionally advanced NPC who received the combination therapy were retrospectively reviewed and short-term efficacy was evaluated. Grade 3-4 oral mucositis occurred in 20 (71.4 %) patients. Grade 3 radiotherapy-related dermatitis occurred in seven patients (25 %). Three patients (14.3 %) had grade 3 and one patient (3.6 %) had grade 4 cetuximab-related acneiform rashes. These grade 3-4 skin and mucosal toxic effects were manageable and reversible. At a median follow-up of 33.4 months (95 % CI 29.2-38.1 months), the 2-year progression-free survival was 89.3 % (95 % CI 76.4-98.1 %). In conclusion, concurrent administration of cetuximab, cisplatin and RT is a feasible strategy against locoregionally advanced NPC. Preliminary survival data compare favorably with historic data and further follow-up is warranted.
